One of the biggest moves during the 2022 NFL Draft was not a pick used to draft a player. Instead, it was the Philadelphia Eagles trading with the Tennessee Titans for A.J. Brown and dishing out a contract extension to Brown.
Part of the reasoning for the trade is teaming Brown up with young receiver DeVonta Smith. As a rookie out of Alabama in 2021, Smith led the Eagles with 64 catches for 916 yards and 5 touchdowns.
With the duo now making up an extremely talented receiving tandem for Jalen Hurts and the Eagles, Brown believes his addition will help both players excel in 2022. In fact, he expects Smith to “dominate” since he will not have to face the top cornerback from opposing defenses on a consistent basis.
“In my opinion, Smitty (receiver DeVonta Smith ) is a wide receiver No. 1,” Brown said Friday, according to Nick Shook with Around the NFL. “And he going against a cornerback No. 2, I expect Smitty to dominate. Just taking pressure off each other. Even being on the same sides, so you can’t really double. It’s great having another great wideout besides you.”
Brown went on to praise Smith’s route-running as such a young receiver and said he believes “the sky’s the limit” for Smith in Year 2. Hopefully the duo combines for a big year with the Eagles.
