Gus Malzahn had an opening on his Auburn staff following the departure of defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson to Florida State but that position has now been filled.

West Virginia assistant Al Pogue is coming home as Auburn has coached Neal Brown’s Mountaineer staff following National Signing Day. Jay G. Tate of Auburn Sports was the first to announce Pogue’s hire at Auburn. Pogue’s official duties on Auburn’s staff have yet to be determined.

Pogue, a native of Mobile, previously held three different titles at Auburn from 2011 to 2013 as he worked his way up Malzahn’s staff. He left to take a full-time position at Troy before West Virginia hired him. Prior to being hired at Auburn, Pogue was a high school head coach in Alabama for nine seasons.

Pogue helped coach linebacker and the secondary for West Virginia’s defense last season. Pogue has been described by some as Neal Brown’s best recruiter at West Virginia.

Following this hire, Auburn is back up to 10 full-time assistant coaches on staff.

“I’m so excited to be returning to Auburn. It’s a homecoming of sorts for me,” Pogue said via a release from Auburn. “Auburn is the school that gave me my first collegiate job in this great profession and I can’t thank Coach Malzahn enough for this opportunity. I’m looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting to work, doing whatever I can to help this program continue to achieve greatness.”
