Alabama’s secondary will have a different look this year after the departures of starters Trevon Diggs, Xavier McKinney, Jared Mayden and Shyheim Carter.

Heading into the season, Patrick Surtain is a sure starter. In his fall camp press conference, Alabama defensive coordinator Pete Golding hinted that he knows who will be starting opposite Surtain: Josh Jobe.

“I think the big thing in this conference and within this defense, we need to have two corners that can lock it down,” he said, “And I think that’s something that Patrick and Josh should be able to do for us and they’ve done well up to this point.”

Jobe totaled just two starts as a sophomore in 2019. The second of those two starts came in the Citrus Bowl against Michigan after Diggs decided not to play. Jobe memorably made the first interception of his career against Michigan, a strong way to end his sophomore year.

Golding said he needs to find another starting cornerback for the “star” slot position. As for the starting safety positions, he noted maturity from Jordan Battle and Daniel Wright.

“[Battle] was thrown into the game early last year,” Golding said. “I think he’s playing right now like he’s played a year. He’s communicating, doing well.”

Wright offers more experience.

“He’s been here for a while, long time,” Golding said. “Really athletic. Can run. I think he’s getting to where he’s understanding what to do — his keys and reads, and training his eyes.”
