Alabama falls outside of top 15 in ESPN’s updated power rankings after Week 8
Alabama’s second loss of the season on Saturday as resulted in a steep fall down ESPN’s latest power rankings.
The Crimson Tide are now at No. 19 on the updated ranking, which was released Monday morning. Alabama fell 7 spots this week following its loss to Tennessee on the road.
Alabama is now 5-2 on the season and 2-2 in SEC play. The Tide may already be effectively eliminated from SEC title contention and their margin-for-error as they hunt for a Playoff berth might be gone, too.
Here’s some analysis from ESPN’s Chris Low on where Alabama stands at this point in time:
Kalen DeBoer knew nothing about replacing Nick Saban would be easy, and it hasn’t been for the Crimson Tide (5-2, 2-2). Their 24-17 loss to Tennessee on Saturday marked the first time they’ve lost two SEC games before November since 2006, which was the year before Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa. It was Alabama’s defense that was shredded in the 40-35 loss to Vanderbilt two weeks ago, but the offense was the chief culprit in their loss to the Vols — along with penalties and mistakes. The Tide committed a season-high 15 penalties.
Despite the fall to No. 19, Alabama is still the highest-ranked multi-loss team in this week’s rankings. The Crimson Tide are even ranked ahead of some 0-or-1-loss teams such as Missouri, Illinois, Army and Navy, amongst others.
Alabama faces a difficult road back to College Football Playoff contention. The Crimson Tide still have games against Mizzou and LSU left on their schedule, not to mention a Week 14 battle with Auburn in the Iron Bowl.
But first, Alabama will face Mizzou on Saturday.
