Alabama fans call for Kane Wommack’s job after first half vs. Florida State
At the halftime break in rain-soaked Tallahassee, head coach Kalen DeBoer said the Alabama defense was playing “hesitant.”
The Crimson Tide missed tackles, mis-fit, and generally just missed through the first 30 minutes of Saturday’s season-opener against Florida State. And, as a result, Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack got skewered on social media.
The Seminoles only threw 8 passes and still topped 200 yards of offense. They entered the break with a 17-7 lead. Quarterback Tommy Castellanos ran 8 times for 56 yards and a score. Micahi Danzy scored on a 32-yard end-around. Florida State averaged 6.3 yards per rushing attempt against Alabama in the first half.
It should be noted that Alabama played its opener without an integral piece in the middle of its defensive line. Tim Keenan is expected to miss major time after undergoing surgery. But 1 player doesn’t cause Alabama to lose its composure against a mobile quarterback, and that’s what happened throughout most of the opening half.
Alabama entered the 2025 season expected to contend for a top seed in the College Football Playoff. The Crimson Tide’s defense was supposed to be elite, capable of fueling a return to the SEC Championship Game.
And, in defense of Wommack, Alabama still has 96% of its regular season to go. The Tide could just be slow to start.
But Florida State didn’t punt in the first half.
And no one was happy about that.
