In Alabama’s Saturday scrimmage, a pair of freshmen wide receivers were reportedly among the players who turned in impressive performances.

Matt Zenitz of AL.com reports that Javon Baker and Thaiu Jones-Bell each had highlight plays:

Freshman wide receiver Javon Baker continues to impress. He had a catch that went for a big gain. There was also another freshman receiver with a big play. Thaiu Jones-Bell had a touchdown catch of around 60 yards against one of the reserve defensive units.

Baker, out of Powder Springs, Georgia, was rated the No. 34 wide receiver and No. 200 recruit overall in the class of 2020 on the 247Sports Composite. Jones-Bell, a former Miami Carol City standout, was right slightly higher (No. 25 WR, No. 144 overall).

While Baker and Jones-Bell could see playing time, they don’t appear to be pushing to crack the starting 11 on offense. Zenitz notes that John Metchie and Slade Bolden are competing for the third wide receiver starting spot.

Even with Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III departed and gearing up for their rookie seasons in the NFL, Alabama appears to be deep at wide receiver again in 2020.
