Alabama makes, spends the big bucks significantly more than other CFP teams
Alabama athletics brings in the big bucks, and it dishes them out just as much.
CBS Sports took an in-depth look at each of the four playoff teams’ NCAA financial reports and other documents for 2013-14. By comparison, the Crimson Tide — and specifically the football program — led the other schools by a wide margin in several notable areas.
You can check out the awesome breakdown in its entirety by CBS’ Jon Solomon here. Keep in mind that all numbers in the chart refer to 2013-14 unless otherwise stated.
Alabama’s total athletic revenue in the 10 years spanning 2005 to 2014 was $1.12 billion, a number derived from USA Today. None of the other three schools reached the billion plateau as Oklahoma with $918.3M was the next-closest.
Over that same span, the Tide spent the most also with total athletic expenses registering at $958M. The Sooners were also next-closest in that category as well at $848.9M.
And, of course, coach Nick Saban made significantly more ($7.09M) than any other coach for 2015-16.
The Tide were also the only one among the four teams to hit the million mark in recruiting expenses coming in at $1.28M for 2013-14.
Some of the other notable takeaways from the story written by Jon Solomon was the percent of university debt used for athletics as Alabama recorded a whopping $14.7M for 2013-14, roughly 25 percent of the school’s debt, comfortably the most. Plus, UA led by a wide margin in broadcast, TV, radio, internet rights.
