Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson exited Thursday’s Rose Bowl game against Indiana in the second half after suffering an apparent injury on a play late in the first half.

ESPN’s Kris Budden reported during the game broadcast that the coaching staff had decided to “bench” Simpson after he received treatment during halftime. Simpson was said to not have the same “zip” on the ball while warming up to go back into the game. He was briefly taken to the injury tent, then was seen on the sideline without his helmet and with a towel over his head.

Austin Mack, a 6-foot-6 redshirt sophomore who followed Kalen DeBoer from Washington to Alabama after the 2023 season, replaced Simpson midway through the third quarter.

According to ESPN, this was the play that led to Simpson’s injury.

Simpson returned to the field at the end of the first half for a kneel-down that ran out the rest of the clock in the second quarter. He also handled the first series of the third quarter.

Alabama went 3-and-out as Simpson connected on 2 of his 3 passes for 3 yards. The Hoosiers scored a touchdown on their first possession of the third quarter to go up 24-0.

Mack had 16 pass attempts in 3 appearances during the regular season.
