Temple’s Tyler Matakevich received the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation’s top linebacker Thursday night in Atlanta, beating Alabama’s Reggie Ragland and Penn State’s Carl Nassib.
Here’s a look at the finalists:
ALABAMA LB REGGIE RAGLAND
The senior, chosen as SEC Defensive Player of the Year, led the Crimson Tide with 90 tackles and added 6.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He forced two fumbles, broke up six passes and caused six QB hurries.
TEMPLE LB TYLER MATAKEVICH
Matakevich is college football’s active career leader in tackles with 462. In Temple’s 31-12 win over Memphis last Saturday, the senior became just the seventh player in college football history to register at least 100-plus tackles in four seasons. He also leads the nation in interceptions for a linebacker with five this season.
PENN STATE DE CARL NASSIB
Nassib leads the nation in sacks with 15.5. This is the senior’s first year as a starter. He began his college football career as a walk-on.
