Things are looking different around Auburn, Alabama as the Tigers’ spring practice rolls forward under new head coach Alex Golesh.
The former South Florida coach and Tennessee Volunteers assistant is making sure of that. Gone are the days of a soft and easy approach to increase the quarterback’s confidence, and in are the days of good, ole fashioned tough love.
At least, Golesh said as much on Tuesday. Specifically, Golesh spoke to reporters concerning defensive coordinator DJ Durkin’s looks in practice, presenting Golesh’s offensive staff with new challenges and “pictures [they] haven’t seen.” Golesh mentioned that the looks are “harder than you want it to be, but you want it to be hard. You want it to be as hard as it can be right now.”
Golesh knows what other great coaches know, that we learn through mistakes and adversity. That’s especially true in football. There is little room for error against the best of the best in the SEC, and each week is a new challenge. In the same vein, familiarity is comfortable, but comfortable doesn’t win football games.
There are 5 months before the Tigers hit the gridiron for real, but the Alex Golesh era appears to be starting out on the right foot. Let’s see if Golesh and Co. can shock a few people in Year 1.
