Arkansas is said to be closing in on its next head coach.

Conflicting reports emerged on Wednesday that Arkansas was nearing a deal to hire South Florida’s Alex Golesh to fill the head coaching vacancy. One report stated that Golesh had already accepted an offer to be the Razorbacks’ next head coach. Another stated that the 2 sides were “deep” in negotiations, leading Arkansas to inform other candidates they would not be getting the job.

CBS Sports’ John Talty reported late Wednesday night that Golesh had not yet officially accepted the Arkansas job. He is the program’s top target but, according to Talty, has told people around him that a final decision will not be made until the weekend.

There is “optimism” the two sides will reach a deal, according to Talty’s report, but Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack was identified as a “name to watch” should the deal fall apart.

South Florida’s CEO of athletics released a statement on Wednesday confirming that Golesh had been contacted with other job offers, though that statement did not specify which programs were interested in him and added that Golesh has remained in constant contact with the USF administration.

Golesh, 41, is in his third year as the head coach of the Bulls. After a pair of 7-6 seasons to begin his tenure — both of which featured bowl victories — Golesh has the Bulls sitting at 8-3 this season.

South Florida hosts Rice on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. The Bulls are seeking their first 9-win season since 2017.
