We have some terrible news to share from UAB as freshman football player Allen Merrick is reportedly in the hospital after being shot on Thursday.
This news comes via Christina Chambers of WBRC FOX6 in Birmingham.
According to Chambers, UAB head coach Bill Clark has issued the following statement regarding the news of Merrick’s condition:
“Please pray for the family of Allen Merrick, a young man who joined our UAB Football Family this season. Allen was visiting home in Gadsden yesterday when he suffered a gunshot wound. He is at UAB Hospital where I’ve been with Allen’s family, but I do not have a condition I can share at this time. I ask that everyone please respect his family’s privacy and keep them all in your prayers.”
Merrick is originally from Gadsden, Ala., and played his high school football at Gadsden City. Prior to enrolling at UAB, Merrick played in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game and was named Gadsden City’s Defensive Player of the Year.
We will continue to monitor this story and provide an update when we have one.
UPDATE: According to multiple reports, Merrick tragically passed away Friday morning while in the hospital.
