Anthony Richardson entered the NFL with huge expectations as the No. 4 pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2023 NFL Draft. It has been a roller coaster journey in his first two seasons, and he came into this offseason in a huge quarterback battle with Daniel Jones.

It has been a tightly contested battle, but on Tuesday, Colts coach Shane Steichen has reportedly made the decision to go with Jones over Richardson in Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins.

That’s according to a report from NFL insider Tom Pelissero:

There have been many issues with Richardson when it comes to being the guy in Indianapolis. During a game last season, Richardson pulled himself out of a game that many people questioned his toughness. In the first preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens this year, he took a huge hit on a sack where he failed to make the proper read.

At times he has shown the potential that made him such a high pick coming out of Florida. No quarterback during the NFL season averaged more yards per completion as Richardson’s 14.4 yards in 2024. The issue was he completed only 47.7% of his passes, which was by far the worst among qualified quarterbacks.

The Colts have said throughout the process that Richardson didn’t have to win the quarterback battle to stay in Indianapolis, but the team will have to make a decision on what is next for him.
