Get ready to see facial hair when you see the men of Arkansas’ athletic department and teams this month. Arkansas announced Sunday that participating men of its Department of Athletics Executive Staff and head coaches will shave for the final time this month on Monday as part of the university’s “Staches for Slive” campaign.
The campaign — a tribute to SEC Commissioner Mike Slive — will raise awareness and funds to battle prostate cancer. Slive announced his intended retirement last month due to a recurring battle with prostate cancer.
Razorback coaches and administrators will grow their beards and mustaches throughout the month of November as part of the national movement, Movember, meant to raise awareness of men’s health issues.
Arkansas will use the hashtag #StachesForSlive, with the money raised going to University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute.
“Commissioner Slive has been a tremendous leader of the SEC throughout his tenure.” Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long said in a statement on the athletic department’s website. “He has had a tremendous impact on coaches and administrators both professionally and personally.
“Now as he courageously wages another personal battle against prostate cancer, we wanted to find a way to pledge our support while raising much needed awareness for men’s health issues. The ‘Staches for Slive’ program is a simple way people can demonstrate their support for all those who face similar health challenges.”
The Razorbacks are launching StachesForSlive.com on Monday, where fans can follow each participant’s progress throughout the month. Coaches and staff members will also use their social media accounts to share updates.
Beginning Monday, the Arkansas athletic department will encourage fans to donate to the Rockefeller Cancer Institute through StachesForSlive.com.
