On the morning of Aug. 31, Army safety Larry Pickett Jr. saved a man from a burning vehicle.
It was a busy weekend for Pickett Jr., who had made his college football debut and recorded a tackle in Army’s opening game on Friday when they lost to FCS Tarleton State, 30-27 in overtime.
Pickett Jr. was traveling with his family when they came across a crashed vehicle that was surrounded by power lines on Route 9W in Fort Montgomery, New York. According to the Fort Montgomery Fire Department, the vehicle collided with a utility pole, causing the power lines to break and fall to the ground. Videos show Pickett Jr. and his father lifting the man from the vehicle and carrying him away from the crash scene moments before the vehicle lit up in flames.
The U.S. Military Academy posted on X that they were “proud of the heroic actions taken Saturday night by Cadet Larry Pickett Jr.” and his father.
Army Athletic Director Tom Theodorakis also posted on his social media praising Pickett Jr. The post says, “Cadet Larry Pickett Jr. and his father exemplify the values we hold dear, stepping up in a moment of crisis to save a life. Proud to see these traits in action, on and off the fields of friendly strife.”
