An arrest has been made in connection to the murder of former Clemson football player Diondre Overton.
The Guilford County Sherrif’s Office announced on Tuesday that it has arrested 20-year-old Jeremiah Diago Blanks. Officers say they arrested Banks in Detroit, Michigan along with the help of the U.S. Marshalls Service.
Blanks was charged with first-degree murder, according to the release. He’s currently being held in Oakland County Jail in Pontiac, Michigan, per the release.
Overton was shot and killed just over a month ago back on Sept. 7 in Greensboro. He was just 26 years old.
Overton was a former captain at Clemson and was a member of the Tigers’ 2017 and 2018 national championship teams. He caught 52 passes for 777 yards in his 4-year career at Clemson, playing more than 1,000 career snaps.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was emotional when discussing Overton’s passing.
“I love Diondre Overton,” Swinney said. “He was one of the best teammates that we’ve had come through here. He was here 5 years. Two-time national champion. Voted captain by his teammates … He truly was just one of the sweetest-spirited kids that we’ve had come through here and again, truly a great teammate. My heart hurts and my prayers are with his family.”
The Guilford County Sherrif’s Office noted in its announcement that the investigation into Overton’s death is ongoing.
