Auburn 5-star WR commit gives brutally honest reaction to Hugh Freeze’s firing
Auburn 5-star wide receiver commit Jase Mathews showed the suffering Tigers fan base that he had plenty of raw emotion on Sunday in the aftermath of Hugh Freeze‘s firing as head coach.
One of Auburn‘s prizes of the 2026 recruiting cycle. Mathews gave his immediate reaction to the huge news that Freeze had been fired, not even 24 hours after the Tigers flopped in a Saturday night home loss to Kentucky.
“I liked Freeze but anything to improve the program is great,” said Mathews, according to a report by Steve Wiltfong of On3 on Sunday afternoon.
Mathews is a Leakesville, Miss., product who promises plenty for that suffering Auburn fan base starting next fall, and those fans should at least take heart that Mathews is speaking from his heart and not hiding his true feelings. He committed to Auburn on Aug. 8 of this year, before the Tigers’ season of misery began a few weeks later.
That misery continued on Saturday night with the loss to Kentucky that dropped Auburn to 4-5 overall and 1-5 in the SEC. Mathews will try to improve the situation on the Plains starting next fall.
According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Mathews is the 135th-ranked player in the Class of 2026, the 19th-ranked wideout in the class and the 6th-ranked player from the state of Mississippi.
