Auburn officially named defensive coordinator DJ Durkin as interim head coach following Hugh Freeze’s dismissal, and AD John Cohen confirmed Durkin will be in the running for the permanent role.
“Will he get consideration? Absolutely he’ll get consideration,” Cohen said, per Caleb Jones of On3 Sports.
Cohen also emphasized Monday he’ll oversee the search personally and hasn’t decided if a search firm will be involved, signaling a hands-on approach that contrasts with other SEC programs. He stressed Auburn needs a coach with edge and competitiveness, along with a proven ability to develop quarterbacks — qualities he believes are critical after the Tigers’ recent struggles.
Durkin, meanwhile, said he’s humbled by the opportunity and plans to continue calling the defense while serving as interim coach. He highlighted the leadership of players like Champ Anthony and Keldric Faulk and said the focus this week is on preparing for Vanderbilt.
Auburn (4-5, 1-5 SEC) is coming off a 10-3 loss to Kentucky, dropping its record under Freeze to 15-19 overall and 6-16 in SEC play. Cohen said the coaching search will be done after the Iron Bowl and that his priority is bringing “the best” for Auburn fans, players, and the program.
