Originally scheduled to start Monday, the Auburn Tigers announced Thursday night that they have postponed the start of spring practice due to the spread of the coronavirus.

“Auburn football will postpone the start of spring football practice and all football-related activities,” the statement read. “The program will continue to assess the situation moving forward.”

Auburn University announced earlier Thursday that sporting events have been canceled until at least April 10 during the pandemic. The SEC announced, too, that sporting events conference-wide would be canceled through the end of March.

Auburn football’s announcement is just the latest in a slew of postponements or cancellations in college and professional sports. The NCAA announced Thursday that the 2020 basketball tournament has been canceled along with spring sports championships such as baseball and softball, among others.

Auburn is one of the few to release a statement specifically about football. Other SEC programs are waiting to assess the situation.
