Just to clarify, nobody wants to see Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham go down against Clemson. War Eagle fans would be quite upset if that happened.

But if that scenario were to arise, Auburn fans can rest assured knowing that backup gunslinger Malik Willis is ready to go if his name is called.

Willis, a true freshman, is apparently the “de facto” backup to Stidham now, according to a report from 247 Sports, as Sean White is still suspended for Week 2 after sitting out the season opener against Georgia Southern.

Gus Malzahn even said earlier this week that Willis could possibly remain as the No. 2 option when White returns from suspension.

“I think he’s improved as much in the meeting room than anywhere else,” Auburn offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey reportedly said. “He’s always been a talented guy. He can throw it, he can run it. He’s improved just understanding of the offense and preparing and taking notes and doing the little things. I think he’s improved a whole lot and I think he’ll continue to get better and better.

Lindsey continued, “… He’s with us and very involved in our game plan. And if he gets the opportunity to play we expect him to play well.”
