As of Monday, Auburn football officially laid claim to 2 National Championships in its history. On Tuesday, that number jumped to 9.

The Tigers will now claim 7 additional national titles, according to a report from On3’s Justin Hokanson. The program says it is claiming titles that are consistent with the NCAA’s official standards for recognizing championships. Previously, Auburn only claimed Associated Press national titles in 1957 and 2010.

“For too long, Auburn has chosen a humble approach to our program’s storied history – choosing to recognize only Associated Press National Championships. Starting this fall, we have made the decision to honor the accomplishments of our deserving student-athletes, coaches, and teams from Auburn’s proud history,” Auburn athletic director John Cohen said in a statement, via On3. “Our visible National Championship recognitions now align with the well-established standard used by the NCAA’s official record book and our peers across the nation.”

In addition to National Championships in 1957 and 2010, Auburn will now claim titles in 1910, 1913, 1914, 1958, 1983, 1993 and 2004. Per On3, Auburn previously recognized the 1913, 1983 and 1993 titles in its media guide, but they were not documented inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. That will change this fall.

Auburn’s most recent newly-claimed national title was in 2004, when the undefeated Tigers were denied the chance to play for the national championship by the old BCS system. Auburn went 12-0 during the regular season before beating Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl to close out the campaign. Most selectors picked USC as that season’s national champion as the Trojans defeated Oklahoma in the BCS National Championship Game.

Auburn will also increase its conference championship count from 12 to 15 with the inclusion of 3 championships it won in 1904, 1908 and 1910. Auburn was participating in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association at the time.
