Auburn isn’t quite ready to compete in the SEC, but the team is making progress under first-year coach Hugh Freeze.
On Friday, the Tigers picked up a commitment from a player who could help the team right away as JUCO safety Laquan Robinson committed to Auburn. Robinson chose the Tigers over Texas A&M and Ole Miss during a live ceremony at his school.
A few weeks ago, Freeze talked about how hard it was for the Tigers against some of these SEC schools that have been dominating recruiting.
“We are getting ready to play 3 teams (who) over the last 4 to 5 years have been ranked from 7 to 5 in recruiting,” Freeze told reporters before the Texas A&M game. “You are playing the best recruits in the nation and we are going to be there soon, but they have a bunch of 5-stars. They are really, really talented.”
Getting a guy like Robinson shows the Tigers are moving in the right direction. Robinson is ranked as the No. 1 JUCO safety in the country by the industry-generated 247 Composite. He’s the No. 8 JUCO recruit in the overall player rankings and rated as a 3-star prospect. Robinson played his high school football in Greenville, Alabama.
In 9 games this season for Holmes C.C., Robinson has produced 49 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 7 pass breakups, and an interception. He had 46 tackles, 3 TFLs, and 1 interception during the 2022 season.
