The Alex Golesh Era at Auburn took an interesting turn Sunday, as Tigers quarterback Ashton Daniels announced he will enter the transfer portal when it opens Jan. 2.

Daniels’ decision, first reported by On3 Sports, comes after he played 4 games with 3 starts at Auburn in 2025. Daniels went 0-3 as a starter, passing for 797 yards and 3 touchdowns with 2 interceptions and a 57.1 percent completion rate.

Daniels replaced Jackson Arnold midway through a 33-24 victory at Arkansas and earned his first start in a 10-3 loss against Kentucky that spelled the final game for Hugh Freeze before he was fired. He previously played at Stanford from 2022-24 and will have 1 year of college eligibility remaining.

Auburn now has 2 quarterbacks on the roster heading into the new year: rising sophomore Deuce Knight and 3-star signee Rhys Brush. Arnold already announced his plans to enter the transfer portal earlier in December.

Golesh took over for Freeze after Freeze’s 15-19 tenure on the Plains ended Nov. 2. Golesh was hired Nov. 30 following 3 seasons at South Florida – during which the Bulls went 23-15 overall and 14-10 in the American Athletic Conference. Auburn has not had a winning football season since a 6-5 campaign in 2020.
