Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze confirmed Monday that running back Durell Robinson will miss time following a “freak injury” over the weekend.

“Unfortunately, we lost Durell for a period of time to a freak injury,” Freeze said. “He didn’t even really know he was hurt after the game. And Sunday morning he had a collection of blood like I’d never seen in all my years of coaching.

“We had to rush him to Birmingham to open that up and get the blood off of his leg, and they had to do a pretty good incision on it. So he’s going to be out for a little while.”

Robinson, who had 731 yards and eight touchdowns at UConn last season, suffered the injury after the Tigers’ 42-3 victory over Ball State in Week 2.

With starting RB Damari Alston still working back from a minor shoulder injury, Auburn’s backfield faces more uncertainty. Junior ball-carrier Jeremiah Cobb paced the rushing attack on Saturday with 121 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns. He will likely see a bulk of the work once again when Auburn battles South Alabama on Sept. 13.

The backfield will need to be sorted out before a tough SEC matchup against Oklahoma in Week 4.
