Auburn RB Kam Martin earning coaches’ trust as season goes on

Auburn has a star running back in Kerryon Johnson, but the Tigers have struggled to find a suitable backup for him this season.
Last year’s star, Kamryn Pettway, has been injured for most of the year, so a lot of pressure has fallen on sophomore Kam Martin in recent weeks.
After struggling early, though, Martin is taking on more work, and coach Gus Malzahn said on Thursday that he thinks Martin will get the ball more down the stretch (via AL.com):
“You’ll see (Martin) more and more,” Malzahn said. “We have a lot of confidence in Kam, and you’ll see him more and more carrying it.”
Johnson highlighted a series in the second quarter of the Texas A&M game last weekend where Martin was able to help the Tigers’ offense move down the field and score:
“He got us down the field that led to one of our touchdowns and gave me a break, and that’s what he was supposed to do,” Johnson said. “He knows that. Kam has always been a humble guy who just patiently waits his turn, and every time he gets in, he does good things. As long as he keeps that up, he’ll be in a great position.”
Against a tough defense like Georgia’s this weekend, Martin and Johnson will both have to have big games if the Tigers are going to win. Watch Saturday’s action at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time on CBS.
