The Auburn Tigers have scheduled a 10 a.m. CT meeting Sunday in the wake of Saturday’s disappointing Iron Bowl loss to No. 10 Alabama – presumably to introduce a new football coach.
Auburn (5-7 overall, 1-7 SEC) finished off a forgettable regular season Saturday night by losing to the arch-rival Crimson Tide 27-20 at Jordan-Hare Stadium under interim coach DJ Durkin.
The possibility exists that Durkin, who previously coached at Maryland from 2016-18, could get the full-time gig. Auburn has also reportedly reached out to Tulane coach Jon Sumrall about its opening.
Auburn has been without a coach since Hugh Freeze was fired Nov. 2 after the Tigers lost to Kentucky. Freeze went 15-19 in his 2-plus seasons at Auburn and is owed $15.8 million in buyout money without mitigation against future employment.
Durkin, who previous served as Florida’s interim head coach for a bowl game after Will Muschamp stepped down in 2014, went 10-15 at Maryland and was fired shortly before the start of the 2018 season following a player death and toxic culture allegations.
Despite Auburn’s losing record in 2025, the Tigers could still earn a bowl game berth, given the team’s Academic Progress Rate given that there are not enough bowl-eligible teams to fill all the bowl spots this season.
