Auburn football has a lot of momentum right now as the Tigers come off a thrilling 27-21 victory over then-No. 11 Oregon in the season opener this past Saturday, so it seems that this would be the right time to talk about that new football-only facility, right?
Yes, per 247Sports, Auburn athletic director Allen Greene and Dan King, associated vice president of facilities at Auburn University, will present the plans for the football performance center on Sept. 13 at 8:30 a.m. and the board of trustees will meet at 10:00 a.m. for approval.
Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, who pledged $2 million to the cause, has long wanted a new facility that will house football and rival those that stand at Alabama and Clemson. Since becoming athletics director in 2018, Greene has also been a huge advocate, helping lead fundraising.
Per the reading material handed out to trustees on Wednesday:
“The intent of the propose Football Performance Center is to provide the Auburn University football team with key and essential capabilities and resources needed to successfully compete within the Southeastern Conference and with national peer programs,” according to materials provided to the board of trustees Wednesday. “The anticipated facility would enhance student-athlete development with space dedicated to strength and conditioning, health and recovery, and sports science, as well as to team meeting rooms, coach and staff offices, equipment storage space, and common areas.”
The facility is expected to cost close to $60 million and will be funded by gifts and bonds to the athletic department.
In May, Greene spoke on how close the Tigers were to achieving the goal in fundraising.
“We’re really, really close and we’re in a really good spot with what we’ve been asked to do from a fundraising perspective,” Greene said in May. “The board, I think, is really interested and engaged with this project, and they want to have a better understanding of scale and scope of other folks in the [SEC] and to help us better understand and better plan as we move forward with our plans for our project.”
