Gus Malzahn trusted true freshman Bo Nix to lead the Auburn Tigers against the Oregon Ducks on Saturday. Malzahn probably wasn’t expecting Nix to be calling plays in his first college game.

Nix threw his first career touchdown pass in the third quarter, finding WR Eli Stove on an 11-yard scoring play. Stove met with the media this week and shared an interesting detail about the play.

“I didn’t even get the play,” Stove said. “I was still waiting on the play and he just looked at me. He snapped and he just threw it. It was crazy.”

Auburn had lined up no-huddle and Nix made the decision to go to Stove.

“I looked down and was like, there’s nobody covering me, and then [Nix] kept looking at me and I was like, ‘Oh, he’s fixing to throw me the ball,’” Stove said. “So, I was just like, ‘Oh, shoot.’ So I just turned around and caught it.”

Being able to improvise a no-huddle play shows that the stage was never too big for Nix. As does throwing a touchdown with only seconds remaining in a close game.
