The Iron Bowl is truly a year-round rivalry – anytime, anywhere.
Former Alabama DB Minkah Fitzpatrick and Auburn WR signee Anthony Schwartz won’t be battling on the field for any SEC West titles, but Schwartz was still feeling the rivalry when he crossed paths with Fitzpatrick on Thursday. Fitzpatrick, a first-round pick by the Miami Dolphins, presented the Gatorade Track and Field Player of the Year award to Schwartz, a student-athlete at American Heritage in Broward County (not far from Miami).
It was a surprise award ceremony. Schwartz told Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald that he had heard the award presentation was for American Heritage football coach Pat Surtain. Instead, Fitzpatrick entered the room to present Schwartz the track and field award.
Fitzpatrick had high praise for the future Tiger.
“There’s a lot more to come in the future for him,” Fitzpatrick told the Herald. “He’s a great young man, great athlete. I know he’s going to carry on what he does at the next level.”
Schwartz also recognized Fitzpatrick as one of college football’s top players in 2017, but he also had the Iron Bowl rivalry on his mind.
“Just him being able to present my award is an amazing feeling, especially knowing that he was one of the most dominating players in college football this past year,” Schwartz said. “Now he’s in Miami so we have that connection.
“But I still had to tell him ‘War Eagle.'”
Schwartz heads to the Plains as a 4-star recruit on the 247Sports Composite. If all goes well, he may get to tell Fitzpatrick “War Eagle” one Sunday on the football field.
