The Auburn wide receiver corps took a pretty big blow on Wednesday, as head coach Hugh Freeze announced that senior wideout Horatio Fields is set to undergo surgery for a broken foot, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

An offseason transfer portal addition from Wake Forest, Fields suffered a broken foot during practice on Tuesday and will now be forced to miss a significant stretch while he recovers from the injury.

This isn’t exactly a small loss for the Tigers’ offense either, as Fields was the team’s third leading receiver through 4 games, hauling in 12 catches for 106 yards across the early part of the campaign.

Now, Freeze and quarterback Jackson Arnold will be forced to rely on less proven players and underclassmen to fill the gap left by Fields on the outside, with 4-star sophomore Perry Thompson being the most likely next man up on the outside for the Tigers.

Unfortunately for Thompson, there won’t be much time to adjust to the new starting role he’s found himself in, as the Tigers are set to travel down to College Station on Saturday for a crucial matchup against the Texas A&M Aggies.

If Auburn wants to avoid a second straight loss and an 0-2 start in SEC play, then Thompson and the rest of the offense are going to have to step up in one of the most hostile environments in the nation.
