Just how tough is it to project quarterbacks in the NFL?
NFL decision makers lose their jobs every year because quarterbacks don’t turn out the way they thought.
With NFL teams dependent on great quarterback play, it’s crucial owners, general managers and coaches get the quarterback position right.
Friday, NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah revealed his ranking of the top 10 quarterback prospects since 2011, and the list included two former dynamic SEC signal callers.
The freak himself, Cam Newton, checked in at No. 2 on the ranking, only behind Andrew Luck, who some call the best quarterback prospect prior to the draft of all time. That’s not bad company for Newton to be in.
The other SEC prospect? Former TAMU quarterback Johnny Manziel. Obviously, Manziel’s career hasn’t turned out like many thought or hoped, but there’s still time to get his life — and career — back in order, assuming a team is willing to take a chance on him. Some scouts were high on Manziel prior to the draft, while others were not. Jeremiah, evidently, was one who was.
Here’s Jeremiah’s full top 10:
1. Andrew Luck, Stanford (2012 draft, No. 1 overall)
2. Cam Newton, Auburn (2011 draft, No. 1 overall)
3. Robert Griffin III (2012 draft, No. 2 overall)
4. Jameis Winston (2015 draft, No. 1 overall)
5. Teddy Bridgewater (2014 draft, No. 32 overall)
6. Marcus Mariota (2015 draft, No. 2 overall)
7. Carson Wentz (2016 draft)
8. Jared Goff (2016 draft)
9. Johnny Manziel (2014 draft, No. 22 overall)
10. Blake Bortles (2014 draft, No. 3 overall)
