A Big 12 football program has reportedly made the decision to move on from its head coach after 5 seasons.

Per reports, the Houston Cougars are firing Dana Holgorsen.

Holgorsen’s Cougars ended the 2023 season with a 4-8 record and will not qualify for a bowl. The Cougars’ season ended on Saturday with a 27-13 loss to the division rival UCF Knights.

The coach spent 8 seasons at West Virginia, accumulating a 61-41 record in the process. After the 2018 season, Holgorsen signed on to lead the Cougars.

Holgorsen’s 1st 2 seasons in Houston were rough, with the coach collecting a 7-13 record. However, things got turned around for the 2021 season and the Cougars finished with a 12-2 record and won the Birmingham Bowl.

2022 resulted in a backslide, with the Cougars falling to 8-5. 2023 would be an even worse backslide, with the team managing just 4 wins in their 1st season in the Big 12 conference. Clearly, the Houston brass felt things were moving in the wrong direction and decided to make a move.

Houston joins Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Oregon State, and San Diego State as notable programs who will be looking for a new head coach.
