Bill Self will not coach in Kansas’ first-round NCAA Tournament game against Howard on Thursday, a 2 p.m. ET tilt on TBS.

Thursday’s announcement from Kansas about Self’s absence noted that Self “continues to progress well from a recent health issue.”

Acting coach Norm Roberts handled media duties in place of Self on Wednesday, but said Self is in Des Moines and traveled by car instead of with the team. Self was released from the hospital on Sunday after a 5-day stay following a stent procedure on his heart that forced him to miss last week’s Big 12 tournament. Roberts on Wednesday described Self as day-to-day and hoped Self would return to coach the team.

In 7 games without him this season — 4 for a university-imposed suspension to open the season and 3 more at the Big 12 tournament last week — the Jayhawks went 6-1, averaging 75.3 points per game and giving up 65.4 points in the process, Matt Tait of KUSports.com reported.
