There probably isn’t a hotter seat in all of college football at the moment than the one Florida head coach Billy Napier finds himself sitting in, and it’s only growing hotter by the day.
Napier entered his fourth year at the helm of the Gators’ program with more optimism than at any other point in his tenure, but all of that has long since faded, leaving only fan discontent behind in its wake.
Amidst a wave of scrutiny and growing anger among Florida fans over the team’s recent form, Napier told the media on Wednesday during his weekly teleconference that he’s focusing on his future.
“For me, ultimately, we’ve got to get consumed with what’s important now, and you live with the result on Saturday,” Napier said. “I think we all want better results. Even sometimes when we win, I think the product isn’t as good as we would like it to be. And then sometimes you can be proud of how you competed and played, and you played a good opponent, and you came up short.
“So, in general, I think it’s about focusing on today, the work, the process, and helping your young people maintain humility when they’re having success, and try to keep that enthusiasm where it needs to be when maybe you’re frustrated or a little bit disappointed about last week’s result.”
A report on Wednesday stated that Napier could be fired as soon as this weekend if the Gators lose another game.
They play Mississippi State on Saturday, with kickoff set for 4:15 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
