At last week’s SEC teleconference, Florida head coach Billy Napier recalled Texas A&M’s late push for quarterback DJ Lagway during his recruitment.

Lagway is probably Napier’s biggest recruiting win during his time as Florida’s head coach. The Class of 2024 quarterback was viewed as a potential savior for Florida after its 2023 season ended 5-7, and it missed out on a bowl game berth.

Lagway committed to the Gators in December 2022, but that didn’t stop Texas A&M from trying to make a late push to flip the quarterback. Texas A&M’s Mike Elko had an in-home visit with Lagway shortly after being named the head coach of the Aggies.

Napier commented on Elko and Texas A&M‘s late push for Lagway ahead of their game against Texas last week.

Yeah, a lot of hearsay. You know, I think that they made a great effort there at the end when Coach Elko got hired. But in general, I think we felt great about everything,” Napier said. “They were one of many teams that continued to recruit him that entire year when he started to blow up. Clemson was very much in that mix, Southern Cal was very much in that conversation, A&M and then the Gators. So, if I’m correct, I think those were the teams that were a factor.

Last season, Lagway appeared in Florida’s 33-20 loss to Texas A&M. On Saturday, he hopes he fares better in a return to his home state as the starter.
