Bo Nix is officially QB1 in Denver.
Broncos coach Sean Payton named Nix the team’s starter on Wednesday. Nix, who finished his college career at Oregon, was competing with Zach Wilson and fellow former Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham.
“The larger body of work,” Payton said when asked why Nix, per Sports Illustrated. “I would say a lot of the off-schedule movement throws, and I think he’s been consistent. It’s not really a reflection on Jarrett or even Zach, it’s some of the things [Nix] has been able to do pretty quickly—his arm strength down the field, all the things that when we evaluated him, you kind of trust your instincts.”
Nix as QB1 is not a surprise. The Broncos used the No. 12 overall pick in the NFL Draft to select the QB who played five college seasons at Auburn and Oregon. Earlier this month, FanDuel gave Nix the best odds to win the starting job.
Nix will be Denver’s first rookie quarterback to start Week 1 since legendary Bronco John Elway. Spotlight debuts are nothing new for Nix. He was QB1 as a true freshman at Auburn, memorably leading a game-winning touchdown drive against Oregon in Arlington, Texas.
Denver wraps up its preseason slate on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Nix will be back in the Pacific Northwest on Sept. 8 when the Broncos open the 2024 season at Seattle. The Broncos-Seahawks game is set for 4:05 p.m. ET on CBS.
