The hotly debated issue ahead of the College Football Playoff this year was whether the one-loss Alabama Crimson Tide should get in over a two-loss Big Ten champion in the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Eventually, the committee settled on Alabama, citing Ohio State’s huge road loss to Iowa as a big factor in the decision.
While speaking at the USO Mayor’s Luncheon in Mobile on Friday, legendary Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said he agrees with having the Crimson Tide in the No. 4 spot (via AL.com):
“I thought for sure Alabama with one tight loss compared to the couple of losses that Ohio State had,” Stoops said. “Even though they’re champions of the league, I still thought overall that would have been my feeling as well — that Alabama would have deserved that chance.”
Stoops added that the Buckeyes’ championship didn’t necessarily impress him, as it was clear all year the Tide were the better team:
“I think the eye test gets skewed quite a bit,” Stoops said. “To me, it’s all about who you’ve played and what your record is and how you’ve played in those games.”
Obviously, Stoops will be rooting for Oklahoma in the Playoff, but it’s also clear he has a lot of respect for what Nick Saban has done with the Tide once again this year.
