Bob Stoops takes aim at College Football Playoff committee over Oklahoma’s ranking
Bob Stoops is hot over the College Football Playoff committee’s treatment of Oklahoma.
The Sooners have held at No. 8 in both of the first two sets of CFP rankings. That’s in spite of a 9-0 record. Stoops, who coached the Sooners for 18 years, would like to know what’s up.
“When did losing not matter? I complained a week ago there were 4 teams ahead of OU, who is 9-0,” Stoops said Saturday morning, via On3. “The longest win streak in America. I’ll tell you what they thought of my opinion. They put another one-loss team ahead of OU. So, now there are 5 one-loss teams ahead of OU. Give me a break.”
Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State, and Michigan—all one-loss teams—were slotted ahead of the Sooners in the committee’s initial rankings. When Michigan State lost its first game of the season last week to Purdue, the Spartans dropped to No. 7.
“If you look at it, they are 9-0 and that’s why they’re ranked eighth in the country and not somewhere else,” CFP chair Gary Barta said of the Sooners this week. “But they don’t have any signature wins. Their best wins are against Kansas and Texas Tech.”
Oklahoma has nonconference wins over Tulane (currently 1-8) and Nebraska (3-7). In Big 12 play, the Sooners have beaten West Virginia (4-5), Kansas State (6-3), what was a ranked Texas team at the time (now 4-5), TCU (4-5), Kansas (1-8), and Texas Tech (5-4).
They play at No. 13 Baylor (7-2) Saturday at noon ET on FOX and still have a road trip to Stillwater for Bedlam on the schedule. Signature wins will be on the table.
