Brad Johnson has bought into Shane Beamer and the changing era in Columbia, and because of that, the veteran linebacker will return for a sixth season with the Gamecocks in 2022.

“The ceiling for this program is nonexistent, and I’m excited to be part of it for my final year here in Columbia,” he wrote on social media.

Johnson, who was the lone returning permanent team captain from 2020, made 74 tackles, which was second on the team for the 2021 season. He also made 2.5 sacks and 4 tackles for a loss. Johnson has battled injuries since he first played for the Gamecocks in 2017 as a true freshman in 11 games at the Buck position.

Johnson filled a hole created by a season-ending injury to Sherrod Greene, and that paid dividends for his career and the defense.
