Georgia Tech moved to continue its football success Wednesday, securing coach Brent Key to a new 5-year extension to remain with the Yellow Jackets.
The deal, reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, has been in motion for weeks and is still pending approval by the GTAA Board of Trustees. Exact financial teams were not disclosed, but Thamel indicated that Key was in line for a substantial bump in pay from the $4.5 million per season he was earning as part of the 5-year extension he signed in December 2024.
Key is 27-19 coaching at his alma mater, including a 9-3 record in 2025. The Yellow Jackets reeled off 8 straight victories to begin the 2025 season before losing 3 of their final 4 to fall out of College Football Playoff contention.
The 47-year-old Key played offensive guard at Georgia Tech from 1997-2000. After a 2-year stint as a graduate assistant in Atlanta, Key moved onto Western Carolina in 2004 and then to UCF for a variety of positions including assistant head coach through 2015.
Key spent 3 years coaching the offensive line at Alabama from 2016-18 before returning to Georgia Tech as assistant head coach in 2019. He was named Yellow Jackets’ interim head coach when Geoff Collins was fired in early 2022 and had the interim tag removed in 2023.
