The South Carolina Gamecocks are set to kick off their 2025 campaign this Sunday against the Virginia Tech Hokies at Mercedes-Benz Stadium down in Atlanta, and they could end up facing a Hokies team that will be missing one of their key pieces on defense in linebacker Caleb Woodson.
The junior captain of the Virginia Tech defense was reportedly charged with a DWI on Saturday. The team released a statement on the matter on Tuesday morning, stating that they were aware of the situation.
Hokies’ head coach Brent Pry was asked about what consequences Woodson could end up facing, and according to Tech Sideline’s Andy Bitter, Pry stated that there will be “internal program consequences” and that the team has yet to make a determination about his status for Sunday’s game.
Pry also said Woodson has been stripped of his captaincy but could earn it back in the future.
If Woodson were to be held out of the game as punishment, it would be a massive break for the Gamecocks, as he was VT’s second leading tackler in 2024 (72), and led all Hokie linebackers in tackles for a loss with 8.
The absence of Woodson along Virginia Tech’s front seven would certainly offer a much easier route for South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers to break contain and scramble for some big yardage should the opportunity arise to do so.
As such, it will be very interesting to see how this situation continues to develop and whether Pry decides to hold one of his best defenders out of Sunday’s matchup as punishment.
