Brent Venables knows all about engineering a defense in big-time games. Oklahoma’s head coach also caught wind of what Oregon pulled off late in the game against Ohio State, and Venables thought it was a shrewd move.
That move involved Dan Lanning intentionally using 12 players on the field with 10 seconds left but Ohio State well outside of field goal range. The Buckeyes ran 4 seconds off the clock on the ensuing play but were unable to pick up any yardage.
Ohio State accepted the 5-yard penalty but was still outside of field goal range, giving Ryan Day’s team just 6 seconds left. Will Howard would then end the game by scrambling as time ran out on the that play.
Asked about the move at his press conference, Venables admitted it was good, especially from a defensive perspective. However, Venables also expects “its just a matter of time” before they change the rule.
Brent Venables is asked about Dan Lanning’s intentional 12-men penalty late in the Oregon-Ohio State game: “I think it’s just a matter of time before they go back and change the rule, but it was good. I say it’s good; from a defensive perspective, it was good.”

Venables appears spot on with his assessment because it looks like the NCAA is already investigating that “loophole,” according to a report from Yahoo Sports. That report indicates it is possible that rule will be officiated differently as early as this season.
