Following a scary incident in the first quarter of Saturday’s 44-0 win over Kent State, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables said the initial evaluation was “promising” for wideout Keontez Lewis.
Lewis was carted off the field on Saturday after a full-speed collision with the brick wall behind the Sooners’ endzone.
On a first-down play from the Kent State 30-yard line, quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. tried to find Lewis in the back of the endzone. The pass led Lewis out of bounds, and after attempting to haul the pass in, Lewis crashed into the wall. After medical staff tended to him on the field for several minutes, he was loaded onto a cart and taken off the field.
Venables said after the game that Lewis was alert immediately after the incident and was able to answer every question being asked of him.
“The initial evaluation was good, promising. I think the latest scans were good as well. What a scary thing for him. Hopefully, he’ll be OK long-term,” Venables said. “It seemed, it appeared that all things considered, he was OK.”
Lewis did not have a catch in the game. He has 17 receptions for 210 yards and 2 touchdowns this season while making appearances in all 5 games.
