Brett Favre shared Tuesday that he was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Favre disclosed that information during a hearing on welfare reform.

“Sadly, I also lost an investment in a company that I believed was developing a breakthrough concussion drug I thought would help others,” Favre said during opening remarks. “And I’m sure you’ll understand why it’s too late for me, because I’ve recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s.”

Here’s video of Favre speaking at the hearing on Tuesday:

Favre also shared this message on social media a few hours after making his announcement:

Per ESPN, Favre is one of dozens of defendant in a lawsuit seeking to recoup at least $77 million in welfare funds that were “earmarked for poor families,” but ultimately diverted to “the rich and powerful.”

According to state and civil lawsuits, Favre is accused of diverting welfare funds to Prevacus (the company he believed was working on a “breakthrough concussion drug”) as well as to his alma mater, Southern Miss. The funds for Southern Miss were intended to help build a new volleyball facility for the program. Favre has denied any wrongdoing.

Favre, 54, last played in the NFL during the 2010 season.
