After dealing with a hip flexor injury early this season, Omar Speights is back on the field for LSU and is making a positive impact.
In his first 2 games back against Ole Miss and Auburn, Speights had 4 tackles and 8 tackles, respectively. Speights did not play in LSU’s game against Missouri.
Having Speights healthy for the back stretch of the season will be huge. The senior brings a huge presence to the run defense, which will be critical against teams like Alabama, which the Tigers face after the bye week.
On Wednesday, Brian Kelly detailed the importance of getting Speights back from injury.
“He’s a really solid run fit defender,” Kelly said during the SEC coaches teleconference. “He is experienced and I think the thing that Whit brings is athleticism and he can flat out run. But there’s no substitute for experience and seeing plays the way Omar sees them. The way they need to be fit. So that’s the difference between the 2 linebackers right now. So we lean towards having a little bit more experience as Whit continues to grow and learn the position.”
After 2 big wins against Missouri and Auburn, LSU heads into the game against Army with momentum on its side. Assuming the Tigers get a win, they will then go into the bye week with confidence before taking on Alabama.
