Brian Kelly discusses the relationship between potential Heisman candidacy and team success

Brian Kelly has a Heisman candidate on his team in Jayden Daniels, but LSU’s 3 losses could keep him from winning the prestigious award.

With other players like Michael Penix and Bo Nix, who are also heavy favorites for the Heisman, having better records than LSU, the team’s success could factor in as a tie-breaker at the end of the season.

On Wednesday during the SEC coaches teleconference, Brian Kelly discussed the relationship between Heisman candidacy and a team’s success. While it’s an individual award, the success of a team could be a factor in a close race.

“I think there’s a modicum of that in terms of how you view somebody’s individual awards,” Kelly said. “But it’s not a team award, it’s an individual’s award. So look, here’s the thing. The Heisman always has multiple candidates that are up for it, so how do you begin to distinguish if statistically they’re all so close, you start to look what are the tiebreakers and some of the tiebreakers become how well the team’s playing. And so that even whether it’s fair or not becomes an influence. I think if you use the eye test, and stats are what they are, it shouldn’t, but I think it’s natural that those things definitely come into play.”

Daniels is making a strong case for the award, recording 2,792 passing yards and 27 touchdowns along with 684 yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground. If Daniels can bring home the award in December, he would be the 3rd LSU player to be a Heisman.
