Brian Kelly explains why it is ‘crucial’ to have a strong running game at LSU
In an offensive shootout with Ole Miss Saturday night, Brian Kelly and the Tigers went to the run game 36% of the time on offense, racking up 223 yards on the ground.
On Wednesday during the SEC coaches teleconference, Kelly addressed why he looked to the run game so often on Saturday and why he wants his offense to incorporate the run game consistently.
“I think it’s absolutely crucial for any really good offense, unless you’re in a specific kind of an Air Raid kind of an offense, that it has the components of an intentional running game,” Kelly said. “It sets up so much that you want to do in terms of taking shots down the field and controlling short yardage and down and distance and things of that nature. So there’s so many hidden components within the game as well in terms of having an established running game. So yeah it’s absolutely intentional and I’ve always felt philosophically I never want to be one-dimensional offensive structure, I want to have the ability to be equally effective.”
So far on the season, LSU has racked up 990 rushing yards compared to 1,767 receiving yards. Incorporating the balance of the run and pass will be crucial moving forward.
Next up for the Tigers is a tough contest against Missouri, which has been one of the hottest teams in the conference to start out the season. LSU will be looking for similar offensive success to the game against Ole Miss, but they’ll also be looking to step things up on defense.
