Brian Kelly won a season opener for the first time as LSU‘s head coach on Saturday as it defeated Clemson 17-10.
But what were some of the key plays that stood out from the game? Kelly sat down with LSU sideline reporter Gordy Rush to discuss.
“We look at ‘How do we get the defense’s eyes off what we really want to do?’ We call that eye candy, and trying to move people around, trying to get different sets,” Brian Kelly said, identifying a point where the tight end was used as a decoy for Clemson’s linebackers.
Caden Durham enjoyed a solid game, taking 17 carries for 74 yards and a touchdown. That’s thanks in part to LSU’s offensive line neutralizing Clemson’s pass rush.
“We’re getting a loaded box most of the time. We’re getting the six-man box. So we had to be very creative in making sure that we could get all hats on all hats in the running game,” Kelly said, opening the door for a Garrett Nussmeier screen pass to Aaron Anderson for a massive gain.
“What I loved about it is the wide receivers being selfless and blocking downfield, and then just the execution,” Kelly said.
Involving pre-snap motion with wide receivers, too, opened the door for LSU to double-team Clemson’s run stoppers, allowing Durham to go on the outside and pick up a chunk play.
“(It’s) built on trying to create an illusion of what you really want to do,” Kelly said.
