Brian Kelly loves his star quarterback, especially when Garrett Nussmeier plays great, which he often does.

On Saturday night against overmatched SE Louisiana, Nussmeier played really great. The senior, who’s one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy, led No. 3 LSU to a 56-10 rout that kept the Tigers unbeaten and on course to do special things in 2025. Nussmeier not only threw 3 touchdown passes, he ran for another score, throwing for 273 yards on 25-of-31 passing with 0 interceptions.

As a bonus, Nussmeier added that rushing TD, his first score on the ground this season.

For the season, Nussmeier has thrown for 962 yards, with 6 touchdown passes and 2 interceptions. On Saturday night, he was once again right on point, and his head coach rewarded him with the game ball, as he singled Nussmeier out in front of his cheering teammates in the postgame locker room.

In his short postgame speech, Brian Kelly made sure to mention that Nussmeier’s touchdown run, something he’s not known for, was what separated this brilliant performance from the rest of them.

Here is the video of Kelly’s short but fiery speech on behalf of his quarterback:

Things will get a lot tougher for Nussmeier and LSU in Week 5 with an SEC showdown at Ole Miss. It’ll be a battle of ranked teams in Oxford, with the kickoff at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC. Nussmeier’s drive to win that Heisman and impress his head coach again will be back on display.
