Brian Kelly revealed new information about quarterback Garrett Nussmeier on Monday.

Per Brian Kelly, Nussmeier has been playing through a torso injury for the first few weeks of the season and won’t be able to begin recovery until LSU‘s bye week.

“He can’t shut it down to recover until we get to a bye week,” Kelly said. “He’s getting better. We have to let him get the ball to playmakers and keep him healthy.”

The offense brought in transfers at the wide receiver position like Nic Anderson and Barion Brown, and the expectation was this offense once again would be one of the best in the country. It hasn’t showcased that type of potential yet, but that makes sense if Nussmeier has been dealing with an injury.

Nussmeier’s numbers are down across the board from what he was able to accomplish last season. After entering the year as a Heisman Trophy contender, Nussmeier has fallen from the ranks of the favorites for that honor.

It’s worth noting Nussmeier also dealt with a knee injury late in fall camp.

LSU will face Southeast Louisiana in Week 4.
